Hearing God's Voice

Music is paramount to our workouts. Whether we are running, lifting, or doing yoga, we are constantly listing to music. This Valentine's weekend, we decided to attend a Skillet concert. Music transforms us, and we love to listen to music that is inspirational and motivating. We also love rock and soft metal. Skillet provides both.

Let me tell you, I rarely cry. I rarely feel. There was nothing in the intro bands, "Ledger" or "Ashes to new" to cry about. You couldn't even hear the words. I was just overwhelmed with life and circumstances beyond my control that I started crying and couldn't stop. It was dark, loud, Jason jumping about...and I sat there weeping. I wanted to die. I didn't like my life anymore.

This went on for an hour and a half, the intro band's ended, Skillet began to play and I was still crying, my sleeves soaked with tears and snot. I had had two beers and was going for a third when they stopped selling and I was even more upset. It was just in between songs when Cooper, the lead singer started talking. I can't remember the exact words, but it was something like, "You are meant to be here". "There's a reason why you are alive". His voice broke through in my head and internally, I denied it. "No, that's so cliche, I would tell anyone that too". Miraculously, his audible voice replied, "It may not seem that way, and you may not feel that way, but you are loved and meant to be here".

I can't remember the exact words, but I remember that the conversation in my head, was matching exactly to his audible response. It went back and forth for about 3 statements and replies to the point where probability wise, there was no chance for anything except God speaking through him, responding to me, audibly, verbatim. I tried blurring out the truth of the situation, but I remember clearly that He spoke to me in the first Audible voice that I've heard. You always hear that people hear God's voice, but this was the first time I heard it, loud and clear, as if someone was talking directly at you. That in the midst of 1,000's of concert goers, God would single me out and speak directly to me, in a conversation, replying directly to my internal dialogue, through the Cooper.

Timing wise, there was no other option that it was anything other than God. I was still in a state of denial when suddenly the song "Be thou my Vision" played. It's a hymn. Being played at a metal concert.

"Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art Thou my best Thought, by day or by night Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light"

There was no question it was God. Then the song "Victorious played".

"Victorious"

  1. I hear them talk to me But they're not listening Their words are kerosene They don't know who I am They'd never understand What it's like to be me I don't wanna be here So stuck inside Tell me how long have I been here I'm losing track of time In all this loneliness In all this emptiness Been stuck inside this room like a prison sentence I'm not gonna stay Tell me there's a way High above it all (High above) Victorious victorious Far too long I've crawled (Far too long) In hopelessness I'm over this Don't give up on me (Don't give up on me) Tell me you believe (Tell me you believe) I can face it all (Face it all) Victorious victorious Can't change this overnight Though heaven knows I've tried Here I go again I need a savior now Someone to break me out Who's been the place I've been Don't wanna be forgotten When I'm dead and gone I just want to be the one who Got up and came back strong High above it all (High above) Victorious victorious Far too long I've crawled (Far too long) In hopelessness I'm over this Don't give up on me (Don't give up on me) Tell me you believe (Tell me you believe) I can face it all (Face it all) Victorious victorious Help me Cause I'm falling When I can't sleep, but I'm holding on Can't face this night alone In all this loneliness In all this emptiness Been stuck inside this room like a prison sentence I'm not gonna stay Tell me there's a way High above it all (High above) Victorious victorious Far too long I've crawled (Far too long) In hopelessness I'm over this Don't give up on me (Don't give up on me) Tell me you believe (Tell me you believe) I can face it all (Face it all) Victorious victorious

To me, it was the first time I literally heard God.

There is something more in life than what we make of it. Open your ears and eyes to the spirit leading you.
